How Much to Spend on an Engagement Ring and Wedding Band in 2026

Real 2026 data, not recycled 2019 averages. The De Beers "rule" explained. And why the $6,000 mean is a poor guide for most buyers.

01

The Rule That Is Not a Rule

"A Diamond Is Forever" was written in 1947 by Frances Gerety, a copywriter at N.W. Ayer, for De Beers. The "two months salary" guideline was a separate De Beers campaign that emerged in the 1980s. The original 1930s-1940s version suggested one month. Japan got a three-month version in the 1960s-1970s. None of this is tradition. It is documented advertising history.

The framing was deliberately designed to make any amount less than two months' salary feel inadequate. This emotional manipulation is useful to understand before you start shopping. There is no cultural, historical, or practical reason why spending more on an engagement ring makes the proposal more meaningful. The value of the ring is entirely symbolic, and symbols are assigned by the people exchanging them, not by De Beers' marketing department.

The mean is heavily skewed by the top 10% of spenders. The median and the 50th-percentile data are much more representative of what a typical American couple actually chooses. When a vendor quotes "average engagement ring spend: $6,000", they are reporting the mean rather than the median, which overstates the typical experience.

Wedding Band Cost Factors

Wedding bands are typically much less expensive than engagement rings. The Knot 2024 data shows the average women's wedding band at $1,000-$1,800 and men's band at $400-$600. What drives cost upward:

FactorCost impact
Metal: platinum vs 14k gold~2x price for platinum

Stone setting: plain vs diamond pavé+$300 to $1,500

Questions

How much do most couples actually spend on engagement rings?
The Knot 2024 Real Weddings Study found the average US engagement ring spend was $5,500, with a mean of around $6,000. However, the mean is pulled upward by a small percentage of very high spenders. The median is closer to $5,000, and more than 50% of couples spend under $3,000. The majority of engagement rings that make couples genuinely happy cost between $1,500 and $5,000.
Is the two months salary rule real?
No. The one-month-salary rule originated in De Beers marketing from the 1930s-1940s. It was expanded to two months in the early 1980s and three months for the Japanese market during a separate campaign. None of this is tradition. Journalist Edward Epstein documented the De Beers marketing apparatus in detail in The Atlantic in February 1982. The rule exists to increase average transaction value, not to reflect any cultural norm.
How much should a man's wedding band cost?
Plain metal men's bands: $200 to $800 in gold or titanium/tungsten, $600-$1,500 in platinum. Bands with stone accents or engraving: $400-$2,000. Men's bands are typically less elaborate than women's and therefore less expensive. The Knot 2024 data shows the average men's wedding band spend at $400-$600, significantly below the women's band average.
Should the engagement ring cost more than the wedding band?
Conventionally yes, and in most cases it does by a significant margin. The typical US split is roughly 75% of the combined ring budget to the engagement ring and 25% to the wedding band. However, this is convention not rule. Some couples prefer matching bands and put more into the wedding band. Some choose a simple engagement ring and a more elaborate anniversary band later.
