Definitions

What is the difference between an engagement ring and a wedding ring?
An engagement ring is given at the proposal, typically featuring a centre stone, and symbolises the promise to marry. A wedding ring (or wedding band) is exchanged at the ceremony and symbolises the marriage itself. Most people wear both, with the wedding band closest to the hand and the engagement ring stacked above.
Is a wedding ring the same as a wedding band?
Yes. 'Wedding ring' and 'wedding band' refer to the same item. 'Wedding ring' is more common in the UK; 'wedding band' is more common in the US. The terms are interchangeable in most contexts.
What is a bridal set?
A bridal set is an engagement ring and matching wedding band sold together, designed to stack perfectly. Bridal sets typically offer a slight price saving over buying the two rings separately, and the fit between them is guaranteed because they were designed as a pair.
What is an eternity band?
An eternity band has diamonds (or other stones) set continuously around all or part of the band circumference. A full eternity band has stones 360 degrees around; a half-eternity has stones on the front half only. Eternity bands are given as wedding bands or anniversary gifts.

Tradition and History

Is the two months salary rule real?
No. It is a De Beers marketing invention from the 1980s, building on an earlier one-month-salary guideline from the 1930s-1940s. A three-month version was used in Japan from the 1960s. None of this is tradition. Journalist Edward Epstein documented the full story in The Atlantic in 1982.
Where did diamond engagement rings come from?
Diamond engagement rings became a near-universal US convention through De Beers' 1938-1947 marketing campaign, which included Frances Gerety's 'A Diamond Is Forever' slogan. Before this campaign, fewer than 10% of US engagement rings contained a diamond. By 1990, over 80% did. The campaign created what feels like an ancient tradition but is actually mid-20th century marketing.
When were diamond engagement rings first used?
The first recorded diamond engagement ring was given by Archduke Maximilian of Austria to Mary of Burgundy in 1477. However, this set no lasting precedent. Diamond engagement rings only became widespread after the De Beers marketing campaign of 1938-1947.

Styles and Design

Which engagement ring style is most popular?
The solitaire remains the most popular setting, accounting for roughly 40-50% of engagement rings. The halo is second. The Knot 2024 data showed oval overtaking round as the most popular diamond shape for the first time.
Do engagement and wedding rings have to match?
No. They need to sit comfortably together without scratching each other, but they do not need to match in metal, style, or design. Deliberately contrasting metals (yellow gold engagement ring, platinum band) is increasingly common.
What is a contour band?
A contour or curved band is shaped to fit against the underside of an engagement ring setting, allowing the wedding band to sit flush rather than leaving a gap. Common for halo, three-stone, or raised-setting engagement rings.

Metals

Is platinum better than white gold?
Platinum is denser, hypoallergenic, and never needs rhodium replating. White gold (rhodium-plated yellow gold alloy) is initially brighter white and less expensive but needs replating every 2-5 years. For lifelong daily wear, platinum wins on durability and zero-maintenance.
Does white gold need replating?
Yes. The bright white of white gold comes from a rhodium coating that wears off with daily wear. Without replating ($40-$80 every 2-5 years), white gold reveals a slightly yellow-warm tone from the gold alloy beneath.

Diamonds and Gemstones

What are the diamond 4Cs?
Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat. Cut is the most important for sparkle (always choose Excellent). Colour G-I is the value sweet spot. SI1 is typically eye-clean. Carat is weight; buying just under threshold sizes (0.9ct instead of 1ct) saves 5-15% for an indistinguishable result.
Are lab-grown diamonds real?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to mined diamonds. The FTC confirmed in 2018 that the word 'diamond' applies to both. They are not simulants like moissanite or cubic zirconia.
Should I buy lab-grown or natural?
Buy lab-grown if budget is the priority: lab-grown costs 30-50% less for the same grades. Buy natural if heirloom value or passing the ring to the next generation matters. Neither type is a good financial investment; both lose 30-70% at resale.

Budget

How much do most couples spend on engagement rings?
The Knot 2024 Real Weddings Study found the US mean at $6,000, but the median is closer to $5,000 and over 50% of couples spend under $3,000. The $6,000 figure is skewed by top spenders. Most couples are happy with rings in the $1,500-$5,000 range.
How much should a wedding band cost?
Plain metal bands: $300-$1,500. Diamond-set bands: $800-$4,000+. Men's bands: $200-$800 typically. The Knot 2024 data shows the average women's wedding band at $1,000-$1,800 and men's at $400-$600.

Wearing and Etiquette

Which finger does the engagement ring go on?
Left ring finger in the US, UK, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, and most of Western Europe. Right ring finger in Germany, Russia, Norway, Poland, Denmark, and most Orthodox Christian-majority countries. Both are correct in their respective cultural contexts.
Which ring goes on first?
The wedding band goes on first, closest to the hand. The engagement ring stacks above it. On the wedding day, many brides move the engagement ring to the right hand before the ceremony so the wedding band can be placed directly on the left ring finger.
Can you wear only a wedding band?
Yes. Many people wear only the wedding band daily and keep the engagement ring for special occasions, or wear just a wedding band throughout. There is no requirement to wear both rings.
What happens to the engagement ring if the engagement ends?
Engagement ring return laws vary by US state. Some states treat it as a conditional gift that should be returned. Others treat it as an unconditional gift. California and Montana typically allow the recipient to keep the ring. Illinois and New York generally require return. Check local law.

Insurance and Care

How much does engagement ring insurance cost?
Typically 1-2% of the ring's replacement value per year. A $5,000 ring costs approximately $50-$100 per year with a specialist insurer like Jewelers Mutual or BriteCo. Standalone jewelry insurance is almost always worth the premium for rings above $2,000.
Does homeowners insurance cover rings?
Standard policies have low jewellery sublimits ($1,000-$2,500). A scheduled endorsement/rider adds a specific ring to your policy for full coverage. Premium is comparable to standalone jewelry insurance but terms differ; confirm whether mysterious disappearance is covered.

Modern Trends

Do men wear engagement rings?
About 5% of straight men now receive an engagement ring according to The Knot 2024 data. The trend is growing year-over-year. In same-sex male couples, both partners often wear engagement rings. The 'management ring' is the colloquial term for a men's engagement ring.
What is the most popular engagement ring in 2026?
Based on Knot 2024 trend data, the oval-cut diamond in a solitaire or micro-pavé halo setting leads. Toi et moi (two-stone settings) and east-west orientations are trending upward. Lab-grown diamonds now account for over 20% of engagement ring diamond volume (Bain 2024).
